Use it to meet a character limit for a social post or meta description, check the length of a database field, or see which words appear most often in a draft.

Frequently asked questions
- How are characters counted?
- Each character you see counts as one, so an emoji or an accented letter made of several code points still counts as a single character. The byte count shows its size when stored as UTF-8.
- How is reading time estimated?
- Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute. These are common averages, so actual times vary from person to person.
- Why is the byte count higher than the character count?
- UTF-8 stores common English letters in one byte each, but accented letters, other alphabets and emoji need two to four bytes or more.
- Is my text saved?
- No. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter or open is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.
